Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent forms the bulk of area known as the potteries.  Situated in a coalfield, the city is the center of the Staffordshire pottery-making industry.  Coal is also mined, and brick, tile, chemical, and tires are manufactured.  The Trent to Mersey canal opened in 1777 passes through the district, this aided the growth of the potteries industry in the 18th century.  Stoke-on-Trent has several museums and pottery collections, and Josiah Wedgwood, Josiah Spode, and Thomas and Herbert Minton are among the famous potters in the area.
