The Icons programme
Year 7 1A About Belonging·
Be able to identify
different kinds of community and show understanding of what it means to
belong to a community. ·
Know and understand
that the Church is a community of believers, local and world wide, and
understand the different meanings of ‘Church’. Belonging· Introduce Icons, what they are and why the work we follow is called Icons (use display). · Play ‘stand up if…’ based on different communities and groups. · What is a community? Give several examples. · Painsley is a community and within it are many groups, name some. · Design a Painsley tree. · What’s the difference between a group and community? · Extension: What it means to belong. · Identify the church as a community. (NB: Copymaster 1) Language· Recap on the idea of Belonging. · Belonging often means you need to know the language. Put up 6 or 7 pieces of paper around the room with a heading on each. The pupils should go around the room adding words they would associate with each heading on the appropriate sheets of paper. · Spend some time looking at the outcomes, which words belong to more than one group? Which words change their meaning from one group to the next? · A group can often have their own language, share examples. · What would you say if…? Written responses. · How would you feel if you were in a group and did not know the language? · Recap on the idea of language. Church Community· Introduce the idea of a church community. · Split the class into groups give time to prepare for the church auction (Use Worksheet). · Feedback to the group by bidding for certain objects in conjunction with group decisions. · Discuss what they chose and why, thinking about what it would make their church like. · Using page 8 discuss the two recipes what’s the difference? What makes church? · Write the recipe or MFI instructions for building a church. · Recap on an ideal church (being a community). People First· When you picture the church what do you see? Draw in the back of books. · What do you imagine the first church was like? · Go through page 9, what it was really like. Bring out the idea of people first, building later. · In-groups design an early church service which shows what the early church was all about, show these to the group. · Write a paragraph on the early church. · Play a word game with the different words for the church. · Sum up what the early church was like. (NB: Church visits and parish talks will take place around this time) The Local Church· Recap on the whole idea of Church community. · Outline how the Catholic Church is organised into diocease and parishes and make notes, use page 11. · On OHT design a parish noticeboard as a class, what might be on it? · Discuss ideas connected to parish life. · As a group form a parish council to address parish issues, such as what activities should be going on and how to make people welcome. A clip from the Vicar of Dibley could be used as stimulus. The activity is to be done live and teacher to go around and make observations afterwards. · Feedback minutes that were taken at the parish council meetings. HWK: Design a parish newsletter. (NB: Copymaster 2) World Wide Church· Recap on the parish, what it is and who is in charge. · Introduce where the word Catholic comes from. Look at the pictures (pg12) to reinforce the worldwide church. · Outline the structure of the universal church, using volunteers from the class to take on different positions in the church. · In-groups do a pub style quiz (without the beer and nuts) in order to reinforce the ideas just presented. · Design a structure to illustrate how the Catholic Church is organised using words and pictures, ensure the following are included… St.Peter, Pope (father), Cardinals, Bishops (pontiff, bridge-builder), Priests, Deacons (helper), Laity, Vatican, Diocease, Cathedral, Parish. · Extension: Rearrange the following words and write a sentence about each. Seeaiodc Iahrsp Ffnipto Eppo Aodcne Srteip Eet.rpst Dethlarca (NB:Copymaster 3) Sharing the language of faith· Introduce the fact that the worldwide church is united through the Mass and beliefs. · Read the top of page 13 together; reinforce ideas from what they saw at the Mass of Welcome. · OHT of the Apostles creed, ask in their books to colour code. · Discuss each belief as historical or based on faith. · Create their own statement of belief. · Use the Cardiff creed as a prayer at the end of the lesson. · Use testing times to reinforce ideas. Identity · Introduce 1B and what we are going to be doing. · Write down (In detail) your first day at Painsley. · Share the Mission statement and discuss. · Underline anything that is evidence of the Mission statement in practice. · In-groups, give treasure hunt clues to give ideas on what makes our school so special. · Discuss how our school differs from other schools. · Write an advert for our school for the local newspaper. · Recap on our special identity. Belief in Jesus· Complete ‘So you think you know Jesus’ in-groups (copymaster 6). · Feedback identifying where we get our information from. · Read pages 17 and 18 and belief in Jesus. · What do we know about the Gospel writers? Introduce each Gospel writer briefly, around the room place information to help pupils gain a greater insight into the gospel writers. · Complete a stationed activity taking notes. · Using the information design a library catalogue card for the Bible. Bible Skills· Introduce the Bible and different translations. · Explain how we find our way around the Bible (include old, new, books, chapters, verses). Copy down explanation. · Bible races (use merits as incentives). · Outline that the Bible is made up of different types of writing. As a class try and find as many different types of writing as you can with examples. (Poetry, history, rules, stories, prayers, good news, letters). · To gain an overview of the Bible, design a bible bookshelf outlining the order and content of the Bible. (NB: Copymaster 7 and 8) What was Jesus like?· Recap on where we get our information about Jesus. · Look at the pictures around the room, what do they tell us about Jesus? Feedback. · Why were the evangelists more interested in what he did rather than what he looked like? · Using the gospels, what was Jesus like? Complete in-groups giving examples from the text see page 18. (B-Band to do a treasure trail of information, to be given references first). · Show a clip of Jesus Christ Superstar; is this the same as the one you read about? · Design a profile for Jesus, including your own impression of what Jesus looked like. · Use testing times as a summary. (NB: Copymaster 9) 1C Living Relationships·

Relationships · Introduce new area and what they will learn. · Ask for a number of volunteers to improvise a number of scenarios. · Discuss the relationships in each scenario. · Spidergram of all the people who are important in your life. · Share with the person sat next to. · At a ceremonies award people want to thank everybody, who would you want to thank and why? Write out your speech. · Hear a few speeches. · What might a Christian say about thanking Jesus? · How important are relationships? Come Follow Me· Introduce the idea that being a member of a group brings privileges and responsibilities. The same is true of the people Jesus called to be part of his group. · In-groups imagine you were Jesus what people would you want in your group and why? · Feedback looking at who he did choose. · Read pages 23 and 24. · Choose one of the disciples and look up the full story, then prepare a testimony on how Jesus called you and how it effected your life. · The church believes that communion is a vital part of being Christian. Imagery is used to describe the relationship between God and his people, i.e., trinity, vine, branches. What other images could be used and why? Portraits of Disciples· Recap about living relationships and disciples. · Many ways of showing discipleship read pages 26 and 27. · In-groups who else would you class as disciples and why? Nominate the best one to share with the group. · Compile a role of honour for people or groups you class as disciples giving reasons. · Play ‘Christ has no body now but yours’ what is its message for us today? · Summary using testing times. 1D Celebrating Initiation ·

Initiation · Being part of a community has to start somewhere. Introduce topic. · Outline the stages in life that lead to this initiation (life maps), relate to the idea of initiation into the church community. · Identify the fact that often signs symbols and rituals help us feel as if we belong. Explain what they are and go through examples. Working examples for school, family, club, and church. · Introduce the idea of sacrament. · Make introductory notes on the Sacraments. (NB: Copymaster 10). Sacraments of Initiation· Reintroduce the idea of sacraments. · Introduce the Sacraments of initiation. · Go through the baptismal service as a working example. · Watch clips from Adam’s Baptism to support ideas. · Recap on the order of service by using pages 30 and 31. · Design an order of service for Baptism including the importance to people’s lives. · Use Testing times as summary. 1E Celebrating Christ’s Mass·

the church celebrates the word made flesh and Mary’s role in the
Christmas event. Time after
Time · Introduce the idea of time, seasons and calendars. · Using the picture on page 35 identify as many as possible. · Identify seasons in the churches year as a calendar on the board, copy down. · Quiz on the main seasons to reinforce ideas. · Look at a variety of Christmas cards. What messages do they give about Christmas? Brainstorm. · Discuss and write up ‘Has the true meaning of Christmas been lost?’ Christ’s Mass: Good news of God’s gift of Jesus· Recap on last lesson. · Where do we get the word Christmas, explain and make a note of. · Introduce the Christmas Masses and share a few experiences. · Give each set of words and ask them to tell me each story from the gospels. · Using bibles bullet point important points of each story. · Discuss a series of questions on the message of each. What does Luke want people to picture? What does he want them to hear? What does he want them to know about Jesus? What does John want people to know about Jesus? What does John want people to know about themselves? Which phrase expresses John’s faith that God was born a human baby? · Conclude by mentioning that everything that God the father wants to say is expressed in Jesus. It makes sense therefore to say Jesus is ‘word made flesh’. Most Highly Favoured Lady· Recap on last lesson. · What did Mary do? Brainstorm. · Due to her importance she holds a special place in the Catholic Church. · Look at a variety of ways she is looked up to in the church. · Show picture of her tomb, what should be written by it for tourists, or a guide book entry. · Testing times as summary.
